Plot Rentals

How much does a plot cost?

Annual Dues that are set by the JME are $15 as of the Spring 2026. This dues are used to maintain the shared space as well as complete special projects within the garden.

The city collects $15 or $25 per year as well, depending on plot size. Moving forward, there will only be half gardens available and so the city fee will be $15 as well.

How long is the rental period?

Plots are rented on an annual basis, covering the full growing season from April to November.

Once you become a member, your plot is yours as long as you pay your dues on time and follow the rules of the garden.

There are city inspections throughout the season and you may be warned and eventually expelled if you do not respect the rules and the garden.

Can I share a plot with someone else?

Yes, you can share the responsibility of managing your garden with one other person per year as a co-gardener. They have to follow the same rules, but you'll always be the main point of contact.

What happens if I don't renew?

If dues are not paid by the renewal deadline, your plot will be released and offered to the next person on the waitlist. The city is very strict with their deadline so please do not miss it! Unfortunately we cannot reverse decisions made by the city to expel members who miss the deadline.

When Can We Start Planting?

You may begin sowing seeds and planting in your garden plot as soon as the garden opens, typically around May 1. Planting can continue throughout the growing season. However, to comply with garden regulations, your plot must be at least 80% planted by June 1, when the opening inspection takes place. Failure to meet this requirement may result in a warning or loss of your plot.

When Do We Need to Close Our Plot?

Your garden plot must be cleaned up and properly closed for the season no later than November 15, in accordance with garden regulations. Please refer to the Garden Management Handbook for complete guidelines.

Supplies & Add-ons

What is compost and straw used for?

Compost enriches your soil and straw is used for mulching. Both are available for purchase through our store and can be picked up at the garden.

How do I order compost or straw?

We do a large group order for the garden each season timed with the opening of the garden. Once your dues have been paid, we'll provide a link to allow you to purchase compost or straw.

IMPORTANT: Straw and compost are available for purchase only at the start of the growing season, which is around mid-April. Please note this is also NOT mandatory and you are free to purchase your own compost or straw separately.

General

The Lock: How Do I Access the Garden?

A new access code for the locks on the main gate, shed, and washroom will be sent to members in the spring before the gardening season begins. Please do not share this confidential 4-digit code.

To open the lock: Turn the dials until the correct combination is aligned with the black indicator line, which is not located in the centre of the lock.

To close the lock: It is best to attach the last chain link on the gate side to the chain link on the fence side. If you attach the lock to the first chain link at the top, the loose links may become trapped between the lock and the rest of the chain, causing the lock to jam.

Why Isn't There a Garbage Bin in the Garden?

The Mile End Community Garden has adopted a ZERO WASTE policy. There are no garbage bins on site, and waste is not managed by the volunteer board members or by the borough. All members are responsible for taking home any waste generated during their gardening activities.

To help keep the neighbourhood clean and maintain good relations with our neighbours, we ask that you do not dispose of your waste in the public garbage bin located near the bench by the garden entrance.

Is the Water on Site Safe to Drink?

We cannot guarantee that the water is potable. For this reason, we recommend that you avoid drinking the water on site. Please bring your own water bottle when visiting the garden.
